In one of the deadliest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing at least 28 people, including foreign nationals, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security meeting in Srinagar with all the agencies following the terror attack.
The terrorists targeted a group, which included women and elderly individuals, in a brazen attack after noon. Eyewitnesses told security forces that two to three men dressed in military fatigues rushed in and opened fire indiscriminately at tourists enjoying the Baisaran Meadows of Pahalgam on horseback.
Security forces were swiftly deployed to the area, and a large-scale anti-terror operation was launched to track down the assailants. Videos of the aftermath showed people lying motionless and bloodied on the ground, while women frantically searched for their loved ones.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir while he was on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia. The attack occurred while US Vice President JD Vance, who expressed his condolences for the victims, was on a four-day visit to India.
